Into the Sun Tour: Day 9, Night out at Kirby’s

Today was another success. I met some locals last night who told me that I should check out this burger joint called Dempsey’s, so I made my way over there for lunch.

This place is legit. The decor is warm and relaxed. The bartender is friendly. The food was………. Incredible. They home make all of their sauces, they only use fresh, local produce, and their meat is never frozen. I had an apple bacon whiskey burger with fire fries. It was all so mouthwatering and savory… Then the bar manager walked over and bought the two of us at the bar a drink. It was a cherry sour beer. Sooo delicious. I had never had one before. It was basically a cherry cider.

After my amazing lunch, I walked around and took photos and then headed home to sleep off my day buzz. Last night, I was invited to a show taking place at Kirby’s. After talking with several people about it, it turns out Kirbys is a bit of a Wichita institution. Evvveeerrryyybody drank there as a teenager. Of course, I had to check it out. Couldn’t imagine a better way to spend my last night in Kansas.

Kirby’s is even smaller than Barleycorns. It has a nice outdoor area where you can sit and smoke, but the interior is a very small box. I do not want to imagine what being there is like on a busy night. Luckily, for a Tuesday, the small space felt cosy. I sat and enjoyed the live music, drinking 3 dollar wells. Eventually, I was approached by an older man who would not stop talking about how we would have beautiful children together. His unwanted advances spurred my motivation to hang out outside and that’s when I made friends with all the smokers. I met comedians, other musicians, and friends of the band. They started sharing their stories about themselves and for a moment, I was completely integrated into their world.

We laughed, we drank, we bummed cigarettes off each other until everybody ran out and then we enjoyed the music and stayed until the bartender shut the lights off on us. It was overcast  and foggy and no stars were in the sky.

I was sad to watch everyone go; I hope it won’t be the last time I ever see them. I made my way to McDonalds shortly there after and then headed  home and fell asleep.

‘Til tomorrow.
